SAN ANTONIO — There are several new developments in the case of a ten-month-old baby who died at University Hospital Wednesday night.
Investigators with the Frio County Sheriff’s Office say Nylah Gonzales was flown to San Antonio from Pearsall one week ago with critical injuries.
Some of the baby’s family members said they believe she is a victim of child abuse, who suffered fatal head trauma.
The investigation into the death is now in the hands of the Bexar County Medical Examiner, where the ruling on her cause and manner of death is pending.
Online records indicate the girl was pronounced dead at 10:40 p.m.
Frio County Chief Deputy Peter Salinas, who is leading the investigation into the baby’s death, said in an email: “We are distraught about the loss of this innocent child.”
From the time they were notified of the child’s injuries last Wednesday night, Salinas said different explanations have been offered about how the baby was injured, but he said they would wait for medical personnel to make a ruling on what happened.
Salinas said investigators are meeting with the Medical Examiner Thursday and “We hope to have cause and manner of death information very soon but also understand that it could take some time.”
Online, a relative of the girl who is running the family’s fundraising effort for burial expenses posted an update saying the baby was not an organ donor as expected, writing: “Due to the meticulous organ donation process, Nylah was not an organ donor after all. Her body came to rest late last night though her soul has been flying high in the heavens.”
Salinas promises no matter how long it takes, the investigation will be careful and thorough and he said he hopes anybody with helpful information will reach out.
