Frio River crests at flood stage causing street flooding in Uvalde County

The Frio River is expected to crest about 16 feet above normal.

UVALDE COUNTY, Texas — In Uvalde County, heavy rain is causing the Frio River to crest about 16 feet higher. Officials urge those along the river to seek higher ground. A Flash Flood warning is in effect for Leakey and Concan until 1:30 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. 

If you have an upcoming reservation on the Frio River, especially for those who are arriving Monday, officials are asking you to stay where you are. TX 127 and CR 348 are both impassable.  Officials want you to stay off of the roads and allow first responders to access areas in question. County Roads are not kept current on Tx DOT websites.  Please listen to your local businesses.

Brett Rimkus, President at Garner Park Concessions spoke to KENS 5 about what led up to the emergency situation.

“So about 3:00 a.m. this morning, we had a, storm system move in from the South, Southwest, and it moved in,” said Rimkus. “And it basically all through the top of Uvalde County going up with the Real County, it dumped a widespread area of five to six inches of rain. It’s still raining at this time, and it got a lot of the creeks up, throughout the night. Fortunately, we’ve had a great response from our emergency response. Everybody at the Delta Canyon has communicated very well.”

  • Highway 55 – Nueces River 
  • B and R Crossing at the 26500 Blk of FM 187 in Utopia
  • Thompson Road at FM 187
  • Panther Hill Rd at FM 187
  • Cornelius Road at FM 187
  • Old Mill Creek Road
  • Sabinal Bridge at FM 187 just south of the Lost Maples Recreational Area
  • Large boulder reported in the eastbound lane blocking it at 17000 Blk of FM 337
  • FM 1050 E/W
  • FM 2690 N/S
  • RM 187 N/S
  • SH 127 N/S
  • FM 1120 N/S
  • RM 336 N/S
  • RM 337 East only
  • CR 348 – River Road, Seven Bluff Crossing and Avant Crossing
  • CR 350 – Magers Crossing
  • FM 1120 – North of Gardner State Park
  • RR 1050 Utopia @ Cherry Creek

An official with TxDOT says, “crews are monitoring and will close if needed. Drive Texas will be updated if that happens.”

“We’re expecting anywhere from a 10 to 12-foot rise, and in some places up to 15, and some of the lower where some of the other creature coming in, between Garner and, Concan this time,” said Rimkus.

The Frio River at Concan and the Frio River below Dry Frio near Uvalde is now forecast to reach major flood stage, according to the National Weather Service.

Concan posted about upcoming reservations and visitors who are expected to arrive at cabins today – urging people to stay put.
