From London to Austin | Teen guitar prodigy plays to support Texas first responders

Rhys Stygal will perform in Austin to raise funds for Texas flood first responders.

AUSTIN, Texas — When devastating floods hit Central Texas earlier this month, first responders were the first on the scene — risking their lives to save others.

Now, a young musician from across the pond is using his talent to say thank you.

Seventeen-year-old Rhys Stygal, a rising star from London, will perform this Saturday at Mozart’s Coffee Roasters in Austin as part of the Texas First Response Benefit — raising money for the first responders who stepped up when tragedy struck.

For Rhys, music has always been more than just notes and chords. Five and a half years ago, he picked up a guitar to cope with crippling anxiety.

What started as a lifeline soon grew into a global stage.

“I like to play guitar,” Rhys simply said — but his talent speaks volumes.

Inspired by blues legend Stevie Ray Vaughan, Rhys says he was captivated by the emotion and energy Vaughan brought to every performance.

“It was all so vibrant and full of colors … it moved so freely,” Rhys said. “I wanted to know how he did it.”

This weekend’s performance marks a full-circle moment for Rhys — playing in the heart of Texas, and using his custom handmade guitars to showcase his talent.  His favorite one holds a surprise: a pick once used by Stevie himself.

“He found one of Stevie’s old picks and put it in the back,” Rhys shared, referencing the friend who crafted his custom guitar.

Austin musician Nico Little helped bring Rhys to town for the event. Little and his band will also take the stage, with 100% of the proceeds going directly to Texas Search & Rescue (TEXSAR) and Texas State Troopers Disaster Response.

“I’ve felt quite worried for people I know about the floods,” Rhys said. “It’d be great to help.”

Nico echoed the sentiment: “I’m hoping it’s packed — because that’s how we raise the most money for the people who need it most right now.”

From floodwaters to fretboards, this time it’s the first responders being lifted — by the hands of a young guitarist playing not for applause, but for gratitude.

The Texas First Response benefit is July 26 at Mozart’s on Lake Austin Blvd.

The family-friendly event runs from noon to 6 p.m., and will have face painting, donut boat rides and much more.

Rhys and a host of other talented musicians will take the stage at 8 p.m.
