Full moon to light up sky late Thursday, early Friday

We will be treated to the rare sight of a total lunar eclipse, which will cumulate in the spectacle of a glowing red “blood moon.”

SAN ANTONIO — If you can stay up late Thursday night, be sure to look at the moon! A full moon will light up the night sky at night.

Then, just a few hours later, a total lunar eclipse will occur!

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth falls in between the sun and moon relative to their positions in space.

This results in a shadow being casted onto the moon’s surface. This leads to a reddish color creating a total lunar eclipse.

Again, this will happen LATE while most are asleep. For San Antonio, the time of the maximum eclipse will be at 1:58 AM.

While there will be more cloud cover closer to the Texas coast, San Antonio should be mostly clear Thursday night and Friday morning.

The next lunar eclipse will occur in March 2026!
