Future of west side elementary school to be decided by SAISD board Tuesday

SAISD trustees will decide Tuesday night whether to close Carvajal Elementary on San Antonio’s west side due to low enrollment and repeated failing ratings.

SAN ANTONIO — The future of a west side San Antonio elementary school could be decided later Tuesday night.

San Antonio ISD trustees are expected to consider whether to close Carvajal Elementary School during their regularly scheduled board meeting.

District leaders say the possible closure is not part of SAISD’s “rightsizing” efforts, but instead stems from several ongoing challenges at the campus.

According to the district, Carvajal has received an “F” accountability rating for the past three years, has a very small bilingual education program, and continues to struggle with low enrollment.

SAISD officials say another “F” rating this year could put the school at risk of state intervention. Combined with declining student numbers, the district says staffing the campus has become increasingly difficult.

Administrators say limited staffing could mean combining grade levels, with one teacher responsible for multiple grades in a single classroom. In the bilingual program, some classes reportedly have as few as five to nine students.

If the board votes to close Carvajal, students would be reassigned to either Barkley Ruiz Elementary School or De Zavala Elementary School beginning next school year.

We will continue to follow the meeting and provide updates as soon as a decision is made.
