Game Preview: Victor Wembanyama ruled out of Spurs’ Sunday matchup with Kings

The Spurs aim to end their two-game losing streak against the Kings at home. But they’ll have to do it without their star center.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs (8-4) will host the Sacramento Kings (3-10) and aim to snap their two-game losing skid, but without their young superstar—Victor Wembanyama was ruled out due to injury.

Here’s what to know before tipoff at 3 p.m. from Frost Bank Center.

GAME REWIND

The Spurs picked up their second straight loss at home against the Golden State Warriors, 109-108, on Friday night. Victor Wembanyama led the team with 26 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.

Stephon Castle recorded 13 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. De’Aaron Fox had 24 points. Luke Kornet added four, Keldon Johnson finished with four and five rebounds. Devin Vassell scored 11 and Julian Champagnie had 14.

The Warriors’ Stephen Curry had 49 points, his second straight 40-point effort against San Antonio.

“From the first 12 games prior, we won a lot of close games, so those felt a lot different than this, but I don’t know if the process of assessment is much different,” said Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson. “Obviously, the emotions at times can ride high with the wins and losses and that’s we’re in the business of, but we’ll get back to work and continue to try to get better.”

THE UNIFORMS

The Spurs will be in their Association Edition jerseys today.

INJURY REPORT

As  of 2:45 p.m., the Spurs ruled out Victor Wembanyama against the Kings as the young star deals with left calf tightness.

“He’s not gonna play today,” Johnson confirmed before the Sunday game. “I think he was just something he felt (after the Warriors’ game), I don’t think it was a specific play. I think we’ve seen around this league recently, the calf tightness thing is not something you want to take lightly. Don’t want to push it there.”

Dylan Harper also continues to be out with his left calf strain injury. Johnson said the talented young rookie is making progress and confirmed he’s out of a walking boot.

“It’ll be good to have him on the court ramping up here pretty soon.”

Devin Carter and Keegan Murray will be out for Sacramento due to injury.
