SAN ANTONIO — Firefighters battled a working house fire in northwest San Antonio Tuesday morning after flames that started in a garage spread into the second floor of a home.
Crews were called around 9:15 a.m. to the 8400 block of Rocky Overlook, where they arrived to find a two-story residential structure with fire showing.
According to Battalion Chief Oscar Gonzalez, the fire appears to have originated in the garage before extending through an exterior wall and into the second floor of the home.
“When our units arrived, it was a working fire,” Gonzalez said. “It looked like it originated in the garage and then extended up through the exterior wall into the second floor.”
Firefighters had to open up parts of the structure to reach flames that had traveled inside the walls and into the upper level. Crews worked to ensure all hotspots were extinguished before clearing the scene.
The home’s single occupant was able to exit safely before firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported to residents or firefighters.
Damage is estimated between $15,000 and $20,000, with repairs expected to include exterior wall replacement and significant interior sheetrock work. There is also some secondary damage to the upstairs portion of the home.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Officials say they were able to determine the area of origin but have not confirmed what sparked the flames.
Fire crews remained on scene for approximately 30 minutes after knocking down the fire to ensure it was fully extinguished.
