Gary Sinise & The Lt. Dan Band perform at BAMC’s Invincible Spirit Festival

This year marks the 30th anniversary of his iconic role as Lt. Dan Taylor in Forrest Gump, which he says led him on a mission.

SAN ANTONIO — Gary Sinise, also known as Lieutenant Dan Taylor from Forrest Gump, visited Brooks Army Medical Center on Thursday.

The beloved actor showed his appreciation to troops, veterans, first responders, and their families.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of his iconic role as Lt. Dan Taylor in Forrest Gump, which he says led him on a greater mission.

That mission, according to Sinise, is to lift people up and to give them a little break from the day to day grind of rehabilitation.

Sinise performed with his band, Gary Sinise & The LT. Dan Band, at BAMC’s Invincible Spirit Festival.

There he also met with hospital staff, patients, troops, veterans, first responders, and their families.

“We try to get there as often as we can, to just bring some joy and lift people up, and to make sure that they know that we appreciate them and we don’t forget what they’re going through,” said Sinise.

Sinise has visited the hospital multiple times, but had not been back since the pandemic.

In 2011, he started The Gary Sinise Foundation.

He says, “Its purpose is to serve and honor the needs of the men and women who serve our country, our first responders, our veterans, and our gold star families. We take care of all our defenders, and their families.”

Sinise says his role in the beloved film inspired him to want to make a difference in someone’s life, especially those serving our country, and making the great sacrifices they do.

“It led me to meet a lot of very very inspirational people who went through that in real life and persevered through those challenges and over came them. That’s been inspirational to me, and a real motivation to try to give back,” said Sinise.

Sinise says the foundation could always use more help.  If you would like to donate you can click here.
