Gas leak causes neighborhood evacuation in San Marcos

Residents are being asked to evacuate by foot and avoid starting vehicles, using open flames, turning on or off electrical devices.

SAN MARCOS, Texas — An evacuation notice has been given to residents of a San Marcos neighborhood in response to a gas leak.

Residents in some portions of the Trace neighborhood are being asked to evacuate the neighborhood by foot.

They are also being asked to avoid starting vehicles, using open flames, turning on or off electrical devices, or doing any activities that could cause a spark to ignite.

The following streets are in the evacuation zone: Snowbell Street, Merriman Road, Jane Long Drive, Paul Pena Drive, and Netherland Street.
Officials say an evacuation notice has been sent through Warn Central Texas and the San Marcos Fire Department is going door-to-door to assist affected residents.

Evacuated neighbors are being asked to walk to the Trace Amenity Center, 201 Rollingwood Drive.

The gas leak was the result of a contractor hitting a gas line during construction.

CenterPoint Energy is on the scene.
