Georgia woman turns 101, shares her secret to long life

Jennie Cook celebrates her 101st birthday on June 14 at Legacy Ridge at Peachtree. She will celebrate with the broader Atlanta community on June 21.

ATLANTA — A metro Atlanta woman is celebrating a milestone birthday as she turns 101 on Friday.

Jennie Cook shared her secret to a long life.

“I was never satisfied unless I was thinking of someone I needed to help,” Cook said when asked for her secret to living a long life. 

Cook is a native of East Point but she currently lives at Legacy Ridge at Peachtree in Peachtree City. Before that, Jennie Cook and her late husband, Bill Cook, raised their three children in the Atlanta area. 

Now, their family has grown to include their six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

The two met on the church baseball field when he caught a ball and winked in her direction. The 101-year-old said that Bill supported her throughout her career as a telephone operator at Sears for almost 50 years. 

He worked a variety of jobs, including at a sawmill and with the ministry. 

“Her stories, wisdom and kindness enrich our community every day,” said LeeAnne Ryan, the Sales and Marketing Director at Legacy Ridge at Peachtree. 

She will celebrate her birthday with the broader Atlanta community on June 21 at Legacy Ridge at Peachtree.
