Immunizations are at the top of the list, but there’s plenty more.
SAN ANTONIO — We are just days away from the first day of school for many kids in south Texas. Making sure they are healthy for that first day is the best way to start the year off right.
Ensuring your child is in tip-top shape for the start of school doesn’t just benefit them, but everyone they come into contact with too, starting with making sure they are up to date on childhood immunizations.
“Immunizations allow children to essentially protect themselves against very serious illnesses that thankfully, we’ve been able to keep at low levels due to maintaining high immunization rates within the community,” Dr. John Bruyere, a pediatrician with CHRISTUS Children’s Primary Care told us.
With kids going back to school in the midst of a summer COVID surge, Dr. Bruyere recommends checking out the Metro Health website for the latest trends if parents are concerned, and the CDC website for guidance, but also talk to the school nurse about what they suggest.
“They can always reach out to their pediatricians to who will become who are knowledgeable about, certain trends and certain illnesses within the community so they can better educate parents on prevention and early detection and treatment of those illnesses,” Dr. Bruyere said.
Making sure their mental health is in check is also extremely important. But if you’re having a hard time getting your child to open up about their day, try the high, low, buffalo technique.
“Tell me about the high point of your day, the low point in your day, and then the buffalo. That just the random point in your day. Just something silly,” Dr. Bruyere said.
Dr. Bruyere says that will get the ball rolling and help your child feel comfortable talking, not just that day, but in the future as well.
