SAN ANTONIO — Giant chunks of concrete broke free from their barrier and destroyed a bridge on the northeast side of San Antonio due to the heavy rain overnight.
Just north of Loop 410 and east of Perrin Beitel Road is where one body was recovered earlier in the day.
First responders said it’s a construction zone, and it was dark, overwhelming drivers trying to navigate the road at the Vicar Road bridge, where the power of the water is even more evident.
The bridge here is ripped apart by giant chunks of concrete from the drainage channel that failed and slammed into the bridge. In addition to all the vehicles downstream there are three more up here.
Two small sedans are in the main channel and another vehicle is lodged under the Perrin Beitel bridge.
“The low water crossing on Vicar Road near Perrin Beitel is currently barricaded closed,” said a spokesman from City of San Antonio Public Works. “The road itself appears to have been damaged by the flooding. Public Works staff are currently focused on keeping drivers safe and addressing low water crossings citywide. Before reopening a closed road, we will conduct a thorough damage and debris assessment once the water goes down.”
Continuing rain caused the conditions to deteriorate.
The water levels won’t recede when more rain keeps falling from the sky.
And remember all this water is racing downstream, so if you are down south? Get ready for more flooding.
As of 11:30am Thursday, there are 40 city roads closed due to water on the roadway. For a full list, visit https://gis.sanantonio.gov/TCI/StreetClosures.
Officials want to remind you that a flashing signal at a low water crossing means that drivers should turn around.
71 traffic signals are currently flashing red across San Antonio. Drivers should treat flashing red signals as if they were all-way stop signs.
