Gina Ortiz Jones leads with 12.8% in UTSA’s new mayoral poll, but many voters remain undecided.

SAN ANTONIO — Gina Ortiz Jones, John Courage and Beto Altamirano are in the lead of a new mayoral poll released by UTSA, however many voters remain unfamiliar with the candidates or unsure of how they will vote with less than a month out from the election.

The April poll conducted by UTSA’s Center for Public Opinion Research was released Tuesday morning. The poll asked registered voters in San Antonio about who they will choose for the next mayor, as well as other issues like the plans to build a Spurs arena and a baseball stadium downtown.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg is leaving office after four terms totally eight years. That is the maximum allowed under city rules. Election Day is May 3 and includes city council races as well as a number of other local races.

The poll released Tuesday shows Gina Ortiz Jones in the lead with 12.8%, followed by councilman John Courage with 7.1% and Beto Altamirano with 6.6%.

18 out of the 27 candidates drew less than one percent of the vote.

Notably, the amount of registered voters polled who did not know yet who they were voting for dropped by a few percentage points from a February poll, but still remained high. In February, a little more than 35% of registered voters said they didnt know who to vote for and April’s poll shows that number at 30.1%.

As for the question of whether to use taxpayer funds to pay for a new arena for the Spurs, 44% said they were not in favor.  That is up from 41% of likely voters being against the plan in the February poll.

And even fewer likely voters were in favor of a new Missions baseball stadium downtown than in the February poll. In February, 35% of people were against the plan, compared to 42% in April’s poll.
