SAN ANTONIO — Want to help save lives and score free groceries for a year? Your next blood donation could do both.

From now through January 31, anyone who donates blood at a South Texas Blood & Tissue donor center will be entered into a drawing for a $7,000 H-E-B gift card — enough to cover a year’s worth of groceries.

Organizers say winter is one of the toughest times to keep blood supplies stocked, making every donation count.

“Winter is one of the most challenging times for our blood supply,” Jay Podjenski, Senior Director, Donor Marketing & Community Engagement for South Texas Blood & Tissue said. “This campaign is a small way to thank donors who step up during a critical season and encouraging others to help ensure patients never have to wait for lifesaving blood.”

The need is personal for kids like 5-year-old Aleyda, who is fighting leukemia. Blood and platelet transfusions help give her the strength to keep going through chemotherapy.

“It’s like a switch flips,” Aleyda’s mother said. “It’s all thanks to generous donors that Aleyda keeps fighting with strength and love. Your donations give children like her another chance to shine,”

Appointments can be made at SouthTexasBlood.org/Give or by calling (833) 968-4493. Just be sure to use the promo code Groceries when you sign up.
