Good Samaritans save older woman having a heart attack while driving autistic child

The Samaritans were Marines heading to the Marine Ball.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Police, fire, and several good Samaritans including a U.S. Marine, coming together to help save an elderly woman’s life and rescue a young child from a terrifying ordeal.

Regina Cooper says her six-year-old non-verbal and autistic daughter Riley and her babysitter were heading to McDonald’s about a mile from the family’s home on the City’s northside. But instead of getting a big fast food meal, they got into a big accident.

Regina Cooper told us, “I was going out to go to a concert that night and going out to dinner before the concert. The babysitter goes, hey, how about I take her to McDonald’s while you leave, while your car picks you up and leave that way.”

Cooper left just after them in her own Lyft, and after just a couple of minutes was about to pass what looked like an accident just before 281. Cooper added, “I saw people really dressed like in ball gowns and stuff pumping someone’s chest. And I go, Oh, that’s horrible.”

And it was horrible, but then she realized her daughter was the middle of it. Cooper said, “I turned and I see Riley being held by a lady in a ball gown. And that’s where panic took over me.”

Cooper says it was right here on Encino Rio where the babysitter had a medical episode, lost consciousness, and ended up hitting the median. Cooper added, “And then I just remember being held by a marine in a formal attire with the gold leaves on his shoulder.”

That marine is Major Ken Huxtable who Cooper later found on NextDoor. He and several others, including his wife, were heading to the Marine Ball, but stopped to help out, not as a Marine, but as a guardian angel.

Cooper says Major Huxtable wanted to stress that CPR is not a joke and to take it seriously.

Cooper says God put everyone in the right place and the right time to save lives.

Cooper said, “The worried Lyft driver, me looking over at the Huxtables, actually stopping to help the people that stopped before them asking for help. You know, it was just a series of very fortunate events that happened.”

Cooper says the babysitter is on the mend and will be getting a pacemaker, and thanks to so many incredible people coming together, will still be here for Christmas.
