Gov. Abbott announces $30,000 reward for murder suspect who started manhunt in East Texas

He is charged with multiple crimes in the death of 35-year-old father Aaron Martinez, who was found shot to death in his pickup truck in 2023.

AUSTIN, Texas — Gov. Greg Abbott announced Thursday that people could receive up to $30,000 for information leading to the arrest of Trevor McEuen, a capital murder suspect who has been on the run since May 5.

McEuen failed to appear for his Kaufman County court date while out on bond. He is charged with multiple crimes in the death of 35-year-old father Aaron Martinez, who was found shot to death in his pickup truck in Kaufman County in May 2023.

According to the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office, the search began May 5 along US Highway 80 east of Grand Saline. Investigators learned he took off his ankle monitor and burned down the building he was living in at his parents’ property. After six hours, the search was called off with police believing he left the area.

Abbott said the Office of the Governor’s Public Safety Office is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information and the Texas Department of Public Safety has added McEuen to the 10 Most Wanted Fugitive List.

In the same statement, Abbott pointed to McEuen as the reason that Texas’ bail system, which he called “broken and deadly,” needs to fixed.

“A violent criminal like McEuen charged with capital murder should never be released on our streets. That’s why I made bail reform an emergency item that must pass this legislative session,” Abbott said. “I urge all Texans with information on McEuen to call the Texas Crime Stoppers hotline or submit an anonymous tip online to help law enforcement apprehend this heinous criminal. Working together, we will bring fugitives like Trevor McEuen to justice.”

Along with this $10,000 from the governor’s office, the Kaufman County Crime Stoppers and Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office are each offering $10,000 as well, bringing the total for information to $30,000.

In order to be eligible for a cash reward, people have to provide information to authorities using one of the following methods:

  • Call the Texas Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-252-TIPS (8477)
  • Submit a tip online through the Texas Department of Public Safety

Callers’ anonymity is guaranteed by the law no matter how the tip is submitted.
