One is to pay for more barriers along the border and the other will make it a state crime to cross the border illegally.
One of them would pay for $1.5 billion dollars worth of additional barriers along the Texas-Mexico border, and the other would make it a state crime to cross the border illegally.
Governor Abbott will head to Brownsville for Monday’s signing these bills that passed during the third and fourth special sessions.
Senate Bill 3 will appropriate $1.54 billion to immigration enforcement efforts, which includes building additional barriers along the 1,200 mile long Texas-Mexico border.
Also up for Abbott’s signature is Senate Bill 4, which allows police in Texas to arrest people for illegally crossing the border from Mexico.
It is already illegal to enter the U.S. without permission under Federal law.
However, under current state law, migrants can only be charged with trespassing onto private property.
This law will upgrade it to a Class B misdemeanor, carrying a punishment of up to six months in jail.
It has sparked intense debate from opponents, saying it will lead to racial profiling by police.
The signing is set for 4 p.m. Monday afternoon.
The new laws are set to go into effect in March.
