Gov. Abbott signs bills to protect homeowners from squatters

Abbott said the new laws will help defend private property rights, which he calls a cornerstone of Texas values.

AUSTIN, Texas — Gov. Greg Abbott signed two bills into law to close loopholes and provide stronger enforcement to remove illegal squatters from homes.

Abbott on Thursday signed Senate Bills 38 and 1333.

SB 38 streamlines the eviction process, requiring trials within 21 days of filing. SB 1333 allows sheriffs and constables to act quickly once a complaint is filed. It also increases penalties for criminal trespass and fraudulent real estate deals.

State Sen. Bryan Hughes, who represents East Texas in the Senate, was a part of the team that created SB 1333, also known as the anti-squatter bill.

“Homeownership is a cornerstone of the American Dream, and with this bill, we’re making sure Texas remains a place where hard work is honored and private property is protected,” Hughes said in a Facebook post.
