Gov. Abbott will be at the border to welcome soldiers to a new military base camp

EAGLE PASS, Texas — Gov. Abbott is heading to the border today to welcome soldiers at a new military base camp. The area is expected to house 1,800 Texas National Guard Troops as part of Operation Lone Star.

Construction started earlier this year and is still underway on an 80 acre lot along the Rio Grande.

Two days ago, Gov. Abbott posted a video to his social media account showing the base camp called “Forward Operating Base” is close to completion.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, the base when finished will have living quarters, a dining facility, gym, armory and other features for the Guard Troops.

The base is part of his border security initiative Operation Lone Star and based on information from a purchase order will operate through Sept. 7 with options for two year extensions.

So far the first phase of construction is complete and 300 soldiers will move in today.

The governor is set to tour the base Friday morning.
