SAN ANTONIO — Starting Thursday, there’s a new update to a much-needed community resource.
The Greenies Urban Farm will hold a ribbon cutting for the newest facility on San Antonio’s east side.
The farm provides up to 25,000 pounds a year in fresh fruits and vegetables to its surrounding community.
On campus, the building will not just be event space but also serve as learning hub and community destination.
The new facility will host Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service staff. It’ll allow them to use the building for new gardens, outdoor kitchens, outdoor classrooms and greenhouses.
The space will also host future farmers’ markets.
This comes five years after the greenies urban farm opened on the east side.
The property on Sherman Street, right near the Frost Bank Center, grows free seasonal fruits and vegetables for the community and can produce up to 25,000 pounds a year.
Commissioner Tommy Calvert, who is behind the urban farm, told KENS 5 about the resource.
“We’re going to have 100 courses that are going to be taught by our Texas [A&M] AgriLife Extension service,” said Calvert. “Those courses range from how to make beer and wine to how to have fresh fruits and vegetables and great recipes that are healthy for you.”
