Greg Abbott, Elon Musk break ground on Corpus Christi lithium refinery

On Monday, May 8, the duo joined forces once more to break ground on Tesla’s lithium battery factory in Corpus Christi.

Per a filing with the Texas Comptroller’s Office, Tesla pursued the site for the creation of a “battery-grade lithium hydroxide refining facility,” which it calls the first of its kind in North America. The filing also confirms a $375 million investment by Tesla into the facility.

Seated in front of a Cybertruck at the event, Abbott presented Musk with a certificate of gratitude in choosing the Texas location for his refinery and had some more kind words for his prized California expat.

“There is no greater entrepreneur in the entire world than Elon Musk,” the governor said, really enunciating every syllable in the South African billionaire’s name. “We are proud he calls Texas home.”

Musk then returned the gratitude to his old pal.

“Tesla is incredibly appreciative for everything the state of Texas, the governor has done,” Musk said.

Musk elaborated on the facility, saying that Tesla would begin construction immediately, finish next year, and reach, hopefully, full production a year later.

“This is extremely fast by normal standards,” Musk said, grinning. “But that’s how we do things.”

Residents of Bastrop County, Pflugerville, Boca Chica Village, and South Austin are all nodding in unison. But Musk assured those in attendance that there’s nothing to worry about in the way of pesky environmental concerns.

β€œThere’s no toxic emissions or anything β€” you could live right in the middle of the refinery and not suffer any ill effects,” Musk said.

No word if Musk will create a town inside the middle of his lithium battery refinery.
