Grieving San Antonio family drives safety upgrades after tragic loss

The city enhances safety on Southeast Military Drive with new signals and a relocated bus stop after Jeanette Espitia’s tragic death.

SAN ANTONIO — Almost three months after a pregnant woman was killed while crossing the street on the southside, that street is getting some safety improvements.

It’s something the woman’s family has been pushing for since she died.

Southeast Military Drive near old Corpus Christi Road will get some new signals on Thursday, and the city is going to relocate a bus stop, to hopefully make the area more safe.

This comes three months after the death of Jeanette Espitia.

Espitia was killed while trying to cross that intersection near South Presa Street.

She had just gotten off the bus at the Dairy Queen and was crossing the street, using the cross walk when a driver hit her back in August.

She was able to push her daughter’s stroller out of the way to keep her from being hit.

The driver did stop to help, but Espitia died at the scene. She was pregnant.

We spoke with her brother last month and at that point, the bus stop had already been moved.

“I do feel a little comfort that these changes are being met,” said Espitia’s brother. “Hopefully, we don’t see another accident out here. I hope and pray everyday that we don’t see that out here every again.”

District 3 will celebrate the upgraded signals at the crossing on Thursday afternoon at at 1:30 p.m.
