Group of seniors from Holmes High School proves hard work pays off

Holmes AVID seniors earned $19M, which is nearly 10% of the districts total scholarship awards.

SAN ANTONIO — A group of seniors at Holmes High School in Northside ISD is proving that hard work does pay off, and in a big way.

Sixty AVID seniors walked the stage this year, but it’s seven standout students who brought in a staggering $10.8M dollars in merit scholarships. That is over half of the class total.

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, which is a college-readiness system designed to help students, particularly those in the academic middle, prepare for and succeed in higher education. AVID seniors are typically in their final year of high school and are actively working towards college applications, scholarships, and future academic endeavors.

They’re heading to schools like Pace University, Prairie View A&M, and Loyola Chicago. Each student has overcome personal obstacles to earn their spots at the schools.

Altogether, Holmes AVID seniors earned $19M, which is nearly 10% of the districts total scholarship awards.
