The Theater Arts Program is seeking performers 18 and older for four ensemble roles.
SAN ANTONIO — The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center is looking for performers this month for a new stage production that mixes Indigenous rituals, storytelling and underground rave culture.
Auditions for “The Miraculous Mixes of DJ Santa Cecilia” will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, at 1 p.m. at the Guadalupe Theater, located at 1301 Guadalupe St. Callbacks are scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 25, at 1 p.m. and Monday, Jan. 26, at 6 p.m. The production is non-union.
The Theater Arts Program is seeking performers 18 and older for four ensemble roles: East, South, West and North, collectively known as “The Followers.” The roles are designed for performers who can both act and dance, and are comfortable portraying migrants and ravers through movement and speech. Performers are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and to bring a headshot or resume.
“The Miraculous Mixes of DJ Santa Cecilia” was written by playwright Amalia Ortíz and directed by Robin LaVerne “Dragonfly” Wilson. the production is set in a Los Angeles sweatshop warehouse during the height of the 1990s underground rave scene. The story explores an alternate history in which a congregation of Indigenous immigrants encounter electronic dance music (EDM) through sacred ceremony, blending ancestral traditions with industrial techno beats near the end of the millennium.
Performers must be able to memorize and deliver lines clearly while moving and working with props such as walking sticks, totem poles and pre-Hispanic musical instruments, including hand drums and rattles. The movement styles in this production range from ritualistic to high-energy running and raving.
The audition process includes a freestyle portion, where performers can choose between cumbia, rave, house dance, or they can present their own movement style. Choreographer Rosa “Rosie” Torres, a longtime San Antonio dance artist and educator with more than 30 years of experience will also teach a choreography segment.
“The Miraculous Mixes of DJ Santa Cecilia” is scheduled to run March 19–21 and March 26–28 with evening performances at 8 p.m.
