Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center now accepting unproduced plays from Texas writers

The open call invites playwrights from across the state to submit original, underrepresented works for consideration.

SAN ANTONIO — The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center is opening submissions for its Teatro Salón Table Reading Series, inviting Texas playwrights to share unproduced work.

The open call invites playwrights from across the state to submit original, underrepresented works for consideration. From the submissions, two to three scripts will be selected for fully rehearsed table readings scheduled for August or September 2026. Those readings will be open to the public, giving writers a rare chance to hear their work aloud and get real-time feedback.

The deadline to submit is Tuesday, March 31, 2026, by 4 p.m.

The Teatro Salón Table Reading Series is designed as a creative testing ground, offering playwrights constructive criticism from peers, theater professionals and audience members.

“We are so excited to produce our third Teatro Salón Table Reading Series,” said Jorge Piña, GCAC Theater Arts Director. “From these series, we have produced to the stage two original scripts.”

Those works include “La Niña Girasol” by J. Cesar Duenas, which debuted in June 2022, and “Las Comadres de Morales Street” by Irene Chavez, staged in March 2025.

The call is open to both established and first-time playwrights, and the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center is especially encouraging submissions from underrepresented voices, including women, LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, disabled and neurodiverse writers.

“We encourage anyone to submit, even if you’ve never written a play,” Piña said. “We want to support underrepresented playwrights and encourage you to submit.”

Scripts must reflect the Latinx, Chicana/o or Tejano experience. Drama, comedy, satire and children’s plays are all welcome. Works with themes centered around Día de los Muertos or the Christmas holiday are also encouraged.

There are a few guidelines writers should keep in mind: scripts must be unproduced, run between 60 and 90 minutes, and be written in English, Spanish or bilingually. One submission is allowed per playwright, and one-act plays, screenplays and short stories will not be accepted.

To submit, playwrights must include a cover letter with the title, the playwright’s name and a short bio, contact information, a brief synopsis and character descriptions. Submissions can be mailed to Jorge Piña at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, 723 S. Brazos St., San Antonio, TX 78207, or emailed to jorgep@guadalupeculturalarts.org. Phone calls are not accepted.

The Teatro Salón Table Reading Series is supported through grants from the City of San Antonio Department of Arts and Culture, National Latino Theater Initiatives, the San Antonio Area Foundation and the Texas Commission on the Arts.
