Gun found in student backpack at East Central High School, district says

Officials recovered an unloaded gun from a student’s backpack at East Central High School, prompting a brief “Hold Alert.”

SAN ANTONIO — A gun was discovered in a student’s backpack at an East Central ISD campus Wednesday morning, according to a letter from district officials.

The letter was sent to parents explaining that East Central High School was put on a “Hold Alert” around 11:30 a.m., after receiving reports of an alleged weapon on campus.

District officials said administrators and campus police searched a student and recovered an unloaded pistol in a backpack. The student was immediately detained and removed from the school.

According to East Central ISD, no students or staff were threatened and the “Hold Alert” was lifted around 11:50 a.m., and the school day has resumed as normal.

“We will continue to follow the legal process regarding the student involved. The student will face punishment according to both the Education Code and applicable law enforcement regulations. As always, we ask our community to remain vigilant—if you see something, say something. The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority,” the letter states.
