It’s a whole new look entirely for the Broadway Central Market with a some callbacks to the original branding. H-E-B announced in a news release that it submitted plans for a second phase of upgrades to Alamo Heights that include a refresh of the store’s exterior as well as “a full remodel of the location’s interior.”

While the plans are still awaiting approval, some of those planned interior upgrades include expanding the seating area for the café, repositioning select departments, adding more energy efficient fixtures and equipment, and improvements to the breakroom and administrative spaces, according to the news release.

“For decades, at the corner of Broadway and Patterson, a special relationship has been built between our store, this community, and our partners,” said Stephen Butt, president of Shareholder Relations and Central Market Division, in the release.

Phase 1 upgrades included updates to the parking lot and repositioning of the loading dock, which MySA reported on in January. Renderings for Phase 2 of the project show upgrades to the parking lot underneath Central Market as well as access to the pharmacy. We also see a dedicated area for Central Market’s curbside pickup service.

H-E-B plans to begin work on phase 2 of the project in mid-2026. The building where San Antonio’s Central Market resides first opened as an H-E-B and was branded as such for nearly 50 years until it became the current store in 1999.

The Broadway location was the second Central Market to open and is some 90,000 square feet. H-E-B has 10 Central Market stores in 10 Texas.

“This major project will take time to complete,” Butt said. “When our work is finished, the newly renovated Broadway Central Market and our friendly partners will be well equipped to continue serving our customers with the freshest and best specialty products the world has to offer, for many years to come.”
