SAN ANTONIO — Officials with Harlandale ISD say Harlandale High School was placed on a lockdown Friday afternoon “as a precaution” while law enforcement responded to the south-side campus after a 911 report.
The 911 call was prompted due to a report of a student believed to be in possession of a handgun. The lockdown continued until the area was secured and was lifted around 5:30 p.m. once officers determined the individual wasn’t on campus.
The student has been identified and detained off campus.
Students and staff remained safe throughout the response and dismissal happened as normal.
Harlandale High School is located along East Gerald Avenue near Pleasanton Road.
Here’s the letter Harlandale ISD sent to families:
“Dear Harlandale High School Families,
This afternoon, the campus was placed on lockdown as a precaution while law enforcement responded to a 911 report of a student believed to be in possession of a handgun.
The San Antonio Police Department and the Harlandale ISD Police Department responded immediately and worked to secure the area. The student left the campus, and the lockdown remained in place while law enforcement ensured the area was secure. The lockdown was lifted once officers confirmed the individual was no longer on site. The student believed to be involved has been identified and was apprehended off campus.
To ensure an orderly and safe dismissal, students were released in a controlled manner at the end of the school day. Students and staff remained safe throughout the response. Law enforcement determined the situation was isolated to the high school campus and did not direct a lockdown at nearby campuses.
We understand situations like this can cause concern, and we appreciate your cooperation as law enforcement worked to investigate the report and ensure the safety of everyone on campus.
We encourage families to remind their children that if they see or hear something concerning, they should report it immediately to a trusted adult or school official. Speaking up helps keep everyone safe.
Please know that we take all reports seriously and will continue working closely with our Harlandale ISD Police Department and local law enforcement to maintain a safe environment for our students and staff.
Thank you for your continued support.”
