SAN ANTONIO — As temperatures drop across South Texas, the need for warm clothing is becoming more urgent for those experiencing homelessness.
Next weekend, Haven for Hope will host its third annual “Share the Warmth” donation drive, an effort aimed at ensuring the community’s most vulnerable residents have the winter gear they need to stay warm, safe and protected during the coldest times of the year.
Haven for Hope leaders say the impact of the drive goes far beyond coats and gloves.
“Nobody wants to be forgotten. Nobody wants to be looked over,” said Nina Padilla, manager with Haven for Hope.
The donation drive has grown steadily each year. Padilla said about 2,000 items were collected during the first year, followed by 3,000 items the second year. This year, organizers are aiming even higher.
“Our goal is to have 5,000 items donated,” Padilla said.
Winter weather poses some of the greatest challenges for people experiencing homelessness, particularly those living outdoors. Padilla said donated items such as coats, scarves, gloves and other cold-weather gear directly support clients staying at Haven for Hope, as well as outreach teams serving people across the community.
“The winter hits our clients the hardest,” Padilla said. “We want everyone to have a winter coat — whether they’re here temporarily or out in the streets.”
With January and February often bringing the coldest temperatures of the season, Haven for Hope says it is committed to meeting people where they are and making sure no one is left unprotected.
“San Antonio has shown up for the last two years,” Padilla said. “So we know they’re going to show up again and help our clients and everyone experiencing homelessness stay warm this winter.”
The Share the Warmth donation drive will take place Saturday, Jan. 10, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1 Haven for Hope Way.
Donations can also be dropped off ahead of the event at several local businesses, including D-Nyce Cutz on Fredericksburg Road, Love Shack Boutique on Callaghan and Potranco, and Jen’s Dance Spot on Austin Highway.
