Hays County authorities issue warning to disabled veterans about their license plates

Authorities say burglars are targeting cars with disabled veteran license plates and are urging gun owners not to leave weapons inside.

SAN ANTONIO — The Hays County Sheriff’s Office has taken to Facebook to warn drivers — particularly military veterans — about a recent crime trend targeting vehicles with disabled veteran license plates.

Deputies say several cars bearing the plates have been broken into in recent weeks, particularly in the Buda area, “where a trend in the victim vehicles has been identified.” Authorities believe the suspects may be singling out these vehicles under the assumption that they “have a higher likelihood of a firearm being present.”

Officials believe the trend is a regional one.

The sheriff’s office is urging gun owners not to leave weapons unsecured or unattended inside their vehicles, and are asking that anyone who is victimized contact them at (512) 393-7800.
