HBCU All-Star Game brings excitement and community impact to San Antonio

The HBCU All-Star Game is a four-day celebration that promotes education, sportsmanship and community empowerment.

SAN ANTONIO — On top of the Final Four festivities this weekend, basketball fever is high in San Antonio for the HBCU All-Star Game.

It highlights the best black college basketball players in the nation while promoting education, sportsmanship and community empowerment.

The HBCU All-Star Game is a four-day celebration highlighting the best of Historically Black Colleges and Universities while giving back into the community.

Its organizers say they wanted to create this experience to have HBCU representation in the big leagues.

“There are currently 450 NBA players, 30 NBA teams, 144 WNBA players, 12 WNBA teams. There’s zero representation of HBCU’s on active rosters,” said HBCU All-Stars LLC Founder and CEO Travis L. Williams.

This is first year the HBCU All Stars is expanding to have 24 of the best men and women play for a packed stadium at the Freeman Coliseum.

“This is college basketball’s biggest weekend, and we have a space to be loud and present and continue to show the world that HBCU’s matter in this space,” said Williams.

On Friday, the HBCU All-Star Game is holding a social justice panel discussion at Tony G’s Restaurant from 6 – 9 p.m.

At Davis Scott YMCA and Pittmann-Sullivan Park, they’ll be holding a free community fun day with free food and games from 4 – 6 p.m.

There will also be a free HBCU College Admissions Fair from 9 – 12 p.m. at Freeman Coliseum.

The fair will reopen Sunday from 10:30 – 1:30 p.m.

“We’ve touched over 8,000 students in previous hosting cities and expose them to HBCUs, and we want to continue to do that work here in San Antonio,” said Williams.

If you’d like to donate, the HBCU All Stars has a scholarship fund to support students who want to go to Black colleges and universities.

On Sunday, the HBCU All Star Fan Fest will start at 9 a.m. with a business expo, the Grambling State University marching bands, and the Divine Nine.

Tip off for the men’s game will start at 12 p.m.

The women’s game will start at 2:30 p.m.
