HCSO: Parents charged with murder in death of baby found in dresser drawer at motel

The baby girl’s parents were just arrested. Investigators say the girl suffocated.

HOUSTON — The parents of a 4-month-old infant who died at a west Harris County motel in May 2024 have been arrested and charged with murder, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced Saturday. Jeremy Fancher and Destiny Campos were taken into custody following an investigation that revealed “horrific details” in the death of their daughter, Brookelynn Fancher, who

Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a child death call on May 26, 2024, at a motel located on Rancho Mission Drive near Highway 6. The baby was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Sheriff Gonzalez, the baby was found inside a dresser drawer where she reportedly slept. Court documents show Fancher and Campos were making preparations for a Memorial Day celebration when they noticed the baby wasn’t moving. Fancher told detectives he took her out of the drawer and began CPR.

The parents had been living at the motel location for over a year at the time of the incident.

Brookelynn Fancher was just four months old when she died. The Harris County medical examiner’s office said she was killed by suffocation.

The HCSO Homicide and Crime Scene Investigation units conducted the follow-up investigation into her death.

Murder charges were accepted against both parents. Destiny Campos, 20, was taken into custody Friday night and booked into the Harris County Jail. Jeremy Fancher, 37, was arrested Saturday and booked into a jail near San Angelo.

“Horrific details. I’m glad our team has remained relentless and sought justice for this precious infant,” Sheriff Gonzalez said in a post on social media.

The sheriff publicly thanked the investigative team and acknowledged assistance from multiple agencies, including the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT), Texas Department of Public Safety, San Angelo Police, and Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office.

“Thanks to them we are closer to securing justice for baby Brookelynn,” Gonzalez said.
