Police say when they found Manuel Mendez’s body, his hands had been tied with rope, his body wrapped in plastic and set on fire.
SAN ANTONIO — A vigil was held Saturday night for an 84-year-old east-side man whose killing has shocked the community and left family members searching for answers.
Relatives of Manuel “Manny” Mendez described him as a man of deep faith who dedicated his life to serving others and uplifting those around him.
“He was always connected with people and praying for people and just a very kind man,” Victor Mendez, Manuel’s son said.
Dozens gathered in prayer and reflection to honor Mendez, remembering him as a constant source of compassion and support. His son, Victor Mendez, said the turnout reflected the impact his father had on the community.
“It just shows how connected my dad was with people and just the love that people have shared — a lot of wonderful messages,” he said.
Victor Mendez described his father as nurturing and devoted to his family, especially his seven grandchildren.
“He was always very nurturing, just loved to spend time with us,” he said.
According to San Antonio police, Mendez’s body was discovered the morning of March 28 near Rigsby Road, close to Roland Road and Interstate 10. Authorities said a passing family noticed smoke and reported what appeared to be a brush fire.
Firefighters investigating the scene went into a drainage channel and found Mendez’s body, which was hidden in the deep brush. Police said his hands had been tied with rope, his body wrapped in plastic and set on fire.
Investigators have not released additional details about the case, and no arrests have been announced.
Victor Mendez said the family is struggling to understand why his father was targeted.
“I can’t imagine this person knows the godly person that my dad was,” he said. “I really believe that person will be found out. We just want justice for my dad.”
Despite their grief, the family said they are leaning on their faith.
“We don’t know why God allowed this, but we see that he’s being glorified, and we’re just thankful for the time we spent with him,” Victor said.
Police are asking anyone with information about the killing of Manuel Mendez to contact the San Antonio Police Department homicide division at 210-207-7635.
