‘He was just a beautiful person’ | Family grieves after Army veteran and UTSA student killed in crash on 1-10

Darryll Owens was killed Nov. 5 after a single-vehicle crash on I-10, according to San Antonio police.

SAN ANTONIO — The mother of a 26-year-old Army veteran and University of Texas at San Antonio student killed in a tragic accident on Interstate 10 last month says forgiveness has helped her cope with an unimaginable loss.

Darryll Owens was killed Nov. 5 after a single-vehicle crash on I-10, according to San Antonio police. Investigators said Owens’ car left the roadway and came to rest in a grassy area. Police said Owens exited the vehicle and attempted to cross the highway, where he was struck by an SUV. He died at the scene.

The driver remained on scene and cooperated fully with investigators. No criminal charges have been filed.

Owens’ mother, Keane Owens, said her son had already accomplished much in his young life. An Army veteran who enlisted out of high school, Darryll was preparing to graduate from UTSA in December with a degree in psychology.

“He was due to graduate December 15th,” she said.

Keane Owens traveled to San Antonio from Indianapolis after the crash. She said she met with detectives and later spoke with the driver involved in her son’s death.

“At first I was angry,” she said. “He broke down crying and told me it was two days before his 22nd birthday. He said, ‘Ma’am, I see your son all the time.’”

She said she chose to forgive him and gave him a hug.

Now, Owens is focused on honoring her son’s life and legacy. She described Darryll as someone who not only served his country but also found ways to volunteer and give back to others.

“He was just a beautiful person — inside and out,” she said.

The family has raised enough money to bring Darryll Owens’ body back to Indianapolis but is still seeking financial help to cover funeral expenses through a GoFundMe.
