‘He was our best friend’: Loved ones mourn SA man killed after noise complaint escalated to shooting

His siblings described Edward as their protector, best friend and role model.

SAN ANTONIO — Family, friends and coworkers are mourning the loss of 29-year-old Edward Trejo, who was shot and killed last weekend after a noise complaint escalated into a deadly confrontation, according to San Antonio police.

About 200 people gathered Sunday afternoon for a balloon release in Trejo’s honor, offering support to his grieving family and reflecting on the life he lived.

“It’s wonderful to see all these people here for him,” said Trejo’s sister, Ayana Trejo. “He was everything to us.”

Ayana and her brother, Christian Trejo, described Edward as their protector, best friend and role model.

“He was our best friend. He was our protector. He was our older brother,” Christian Trejo said. “He was a great man. It’s just hard.”

Police say the shooting happened just after 5 a.m. on December 21 at Trejo’s home on Cincinnati Avenue near Interstate 10.

Investigators allege 40-year-old Paul Flores went to the home to complain about noise. The situation escalated into an argument that turned physical.

According to police, Flores pulled out a gun and shot Trejo multiple times. Trejo was rushed to a hospital, where he later died. The medical examiner ruled the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the neck.

Family members say Trejo — affectionately nicknamed “Fatso,” a childhood nickname that stuck — was known for his energy, love of music and strong bond with his siblings. He loved singing, dancing and playing sports, often spending time on the field with his brother and sister.

“We always played ball together,” Christian Trejo said. “Those are the memories, just being outside together.”

Before the balloons were released, a family member led a prayer, asking for strength and comfort as the family continues to grieve. While they say justice cannot replace what was lost, they hope Trejo will be remembered for his love, loyalty and sacrifice.

“I love you. I miss you,” Christian and Ayana Trejo said. “We love you man.”

Flores has been charged with murder and is currently held in the Bexar County Jail on a $125,000 bond.
