
The southbound lanes of Highway 96 will be closed for an unforeseen amount of time, due to a three vehicle wreck.
BUNA, Texas — Two people, including a child, were killed and another person was critically injured in a head-on collision Friday night on U.S. Highway 96, near County Road 791, near Buna.
The crash happened at around 8:15 p.m. when a 2023 Hyundai Elantra traveling north crossed the center median into the southbound lane and struck a 2024 Kia Sportage head-on, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The driver of the Hyundai was pronounced dead at the scene by a Justice of the Peace. Their identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The driver of the Kia was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and a child passenger in the Kia was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash caused a temporary lane closure on Highway 96 and the southbound lanes were expected to remain closed for an unforeseen amount of time, according to Jasper County Sheriff Chuck Havard.
Numerous emergency vehicles were on scene, and DPS is in charge of the investigation.
The crash remains under investigation, and no further details are available.
