Healthy SA: Using mindfulness to reduce anxiety

Life moves fast, and to keep your stress in check mindfulness may be the easiest and most effective way to go

SAN ANTONIO — When we think of health we typically think of our physical health because that is easier to tackle. But in today’s Healthy SA, we find out how making sure your mind is in tip top shape will help keep your overall body health in check too.

Mindfulness, or mindfulness meditation is a practical way to lower stress and support your overall health. All it takes is being aware of the moment you are in right now, focusing on your feelings, your body, and your immediate surroundings.

“We can do much more than we think we can do. Jeremy, our mind and thoughts most of the time are limiting of true potential,” said Gilbert Martina, is the who is the President of the Football Federation of Curacao. His team, representing a country of just 155,000 people, just went to the World Cup for the first time in history. He’s also an emotional healing and mental health coach, stressing the concept of mindfulness to his players. He told us, “Because our true strength lies in the calmness and and the silence. Not in the busy, busy, busy busy busy busy daily activities. I got to do this. I got to do that.”

Martina, who is also the author of “Healthy Minds, Healthy Nation: How Meditation, Shamanism, and Indigenous Healing Can Tap into Your Light Within and Change the World,” says, just like the stress of playing in the big game, the stress of life can be cut down if your mind is in the right place. He added, “Our mind can create psychosomatic disease, but our mind can create psychosomatic help too. So having a calm mind is very important, especially on the high pressure.”

Some benefits of mindfulness medication include lowering stress and anxiety, helps with long-lasting pain, manages depression, improves your sleep quality, and even reducing high blood pressure.

A few easy mindfulness exercises include pausing to experience what is around you, focusing on breathing to distract your mind from negative thoughts, living in the moment, and turning off screens and phones. Martina also said, “Once we turn our senses inside and set to the external world, that’s a very powerful way to calm our mind.”
