SAN ANTONIO — This week marks one year since the tragic incident in San Antonio, where a Texas high school coach was killed at a downtown bar.
28-year-old Ayden Rose Burt was shot and killed by a stray bullet in the early morning hours of July 23, 2024, while she was sitting in the patio of Smoke Skybar.
Burt was in San Antonio for the Texas High School Coaches Association conference.
David Burt, Ayden’s father, talked to KENS 5 after the shooting and said she was planning to leave that later that day to meet him at Crystal Beach. It was a tip Burt never got to make.
“I’m in disbelief,” David Burt said. “I’m not sure I’m fully comprehending it. You know, everywhere I walk, I see her. I’m never going to hear her voice again. I’m never going to see her smile. I’m never going to see her reaching her potential. It’s just heartbreaking.”
She was going to teach sophomore and senior English at Jasper High School, where she was also going to be the head powerlifting and assistant track coach.
San Antonio police said the stray bullet that struck Burt most likely came from I-37. Burt’s back was facing the highway when she was hit.
Their only lead in Burt’s murder is a picture of a car that was released a few weeks after Burt’s death.
SAPD is asking for the public’s help to solve the case.
