‘Heartbroken’: Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino speaks out after deadly shooting

Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino has released its first statement following a fatal shooting that left two people dead and several injured on Sunday, September 28. The casino stated it will remain temporarily closed out of respect for those impacted and to allow authorities to continue their investigation.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic events that occurred at Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino this weekend,” the casino stated in a social media post on Monday, September 29. “Our deepest condolences go out to the victims, their families, and all those affected.”

The shooting occurred around 12:15 a.m. at Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino, near the Texas-Mexico border. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, and another died en route to a hospital, according to Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber.

San Antonio’s University Health posted on X that it has received two patients from the shooting. The hospital stated a 22-year-old female was treated and released, while they continue to treat a 59-year-old female, who is in serious condition.

Schmerber has identified the suspected shooter as Keyran Jones, a 34-year-old man from San Antonio. Jones has been charged with two counts of capital murder and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon, according to officials. He was arrested after fleeing the scene in a black Nissan truck and traveling about 180 miles from the casino to Stockdale. Authorities said they were able to confirm he was the shooter through vehicle tracking via license plate recognition systems.

The bond for Jones has been set at $4.5 million, with $1.5 million for each count of capital murder and $300,000 for five charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Maverick County Sheriff’s Office.
