Charisse Thomas’s daughter, Destani, was killed in a drunk driving wreck. She hopes her daughter’s story will keep this from happening to other families.
HOUSTON — Heads up on the roads. Police are increasing their presence this Labor Day weekend and looking for drunk drivers.
Many local agencies are participating in an anti-drunk driving campaign. TxDOT is sharing statistics, but behind the numbers are the lives of fellow Texans.
This weekend, law enforcement agencies including Texas DPS, Harris County Precinct 1 constables, and Houston Police will be increasing enforcement of drunk driving.
According to TxDOT, there were 327 DUI or alcohol-related traffic crashes in Texas during last year’s Labor Day weekend.
Charisse Thomas volunteers with Mothers Against Drunk Driving after losing her daughter, Destani, in a drunk driving crash. She recalls the heartbreaking moment speaking with police on the scene in 2020.
“They could not believe that he had hit her so hard that it knocked her into the passenger seat,” Thomas said. “The impaired driver was going 66. Destani was going 6. It stripped Destani of the life she had in front of her.”
That’s why TxDOT is encouraging people to plan ahead. They’re encouraging people to designate a sober driver or use a rideshare service or mass transit if they plan on drinking.
Because it’s no refusal weekend, judges will be on hand to sign warrants to draw blood if someone refuses a breathalyzer.
