Volunteers say people have requested the need for power tools, hand tools and lawn mowers and weedwhackers, which can be hard to come by.
LEANDER, Texas — Cleanup efforts continue in the Sandy Creek area, one of the communities hit hardest by recent devastating floods.
Amanda Damian, who lives in Georgetown, has been traveling daily to Sandy Creek since the flooding began to volunteer where she can.
As people begin to piece their lives back together, she said what people tell her they need the most are tools.
To lend a helping hand, Damian and other volunteers lead a community-driven tool drive to address critical recovery needs.
Volunteers gathered on Friday and Saturday to collect and distribute hand tools, lawn mowers, weed eaters and building materials such as plywood, sheetrock and screws – items many residents lost or cannot access in the wake of the disaster.
“The flood did major devastation. All of the vegetation is growing back now and people need to get their properties back in order. They need everything you can think of to help them put their houses together again,” she said.
On the first day of collections, Friday, Damian said at least 22 cars dropped off supplies and donations. She said people are mostly asking for hand tools, power tools and tools like lawnmowers, which might be hard to come by.
Volunteers expect more donations as word spreads. Residents in need of tools are asked to fill out a Google form so volunteers can coordinate and deliver orders directly to affected households.
She said at least 28 people have already filled it out.
