Helping San Antonio’s seniors age with dignity: Local nonprofit hosts first 5K Walk

Their goal was to reach $15,000, and the nonprofit’s CEO is certain that mark will be met.

SAN ANTONIO — Under a soft morning sky, 150 runners set out through Southside Lions Park, their footsteps echoing a shared mission — to help San Antonio’s seniors age with dignity.

King’s Compassion, a local nonprofit that serves older adults struggling to afford groceries and essentials, hosted its first-ever 5K walk this weekend. The event brought together community members determined to make a lasting impact.

“What we do with delivery to our seniors that can’t get out is very unique to San Antonio,” said Rose Reyes, CEO of King’s Compassion. “There’s so much need, and we’re currently the only ones who do it like that.”

Reyes says the organization hopes to raise $15,000 — a goal she’s confident they’ll reach, especially as demand for their services grows amid the ongoing government shutdown.

“The runners today — it’s just so very encouraging for us,” Reyes added. “We want to keep helping as many seniors as possible.”

For recipients like Yolanda Garcia and Margarita Rios, the organization’s impact goes far beyond meal deliveries.

“I was sick at one time and got out of the hospital,” Garcia said. “They came over, made me breakfast, cleaned up my kitchen, and I appreciated that. But most of all, they prayed over me.”

Rios says King’s Compassion has become like family.

“They remember you on your birthday, Christmas, Thanksgiving — and they bring you hot meals and surprises,” she said. “Especially when you’ve had double knee replacements. They even do your yard. They’re so nice.”

Even a friendly face, the women say, makes all the difference.

“Sometimes we get lonely because we’re by ourselves,” Garcia shared. “And there’s compassion right there for us.”

For Reyes, hearing those stories firsthand is both humbling and motivating.

“We always hope we’re doing a great job and making an impact,” she said. “To have them share what it means to them — it’s reaffirming for us.”

King’s Compassion plans to continue expanding its outreach across San Antonio, ensuring that no senior feels forgotten.
