SAN ANTONIO — Just in time for Spring Break!
In a Facebook post, Hemisfair has announced the day Civic Park Phase 2 will open.
In the post, the district said the second phase will open on March 7. Phase 1 opened in September 2023.
This new section of Civic Park connects Hemisfair with “one of the busiest pedestrian intersections in the city.”
Phase 2 includes three new features:
- Source Plaza: “Considered San Antonio’s front porch at the corner of Market Street and S. Alamo Street – the busiest pedestrian intersection in the city!”
- The Promenade: “A shady, pedestrian connection between Downtown and Southtown.”
- The Zócalo: “A flexible terrace with seating, decorative tilework and a water feature inspired by our region’s acequias.”
The Stage area was also included in the post, but opened during Phase 1. It’s currently home to concerts and large-scale events like Dia de los Muertos.
“This is where people come to see who we are,” Andres Andujar, CEO of Hemisfair said.
Andujar is retiring this year and handing over the reigns to Melissa Chamrad, Director of Real Estate and Finance for Hemisfair.

Chamrad gave a sneak-peek preview tour on March 5 showcasing the new amenities and features. She said Hemisfair focused on providing shade and water within the Civic Park, which lead to the planting of 59 trees for Phase 2 and the addition of the Kapmann Family Fountain.

Chamrad mentioned there’s also small skate stops surrounding the ground and boundary areas in an effort to discourage to bicyclist and skaters, and to protect the Civic Park.

Before the preview tour, Andujar said the project has taken years to unveil due to funding, which was separated into phases to alleviate finances.
Director of External Relations at Hemisfair provided a breakdown of the project’s cost.
She said a bond in 2017 granted Phase 1 with $21 million and an additional $18.1 million from the monetization of lease revenues.
Phase 2 cost $20 million that was allocated from a 2022 bond.
Phase 3 in Tower Park is set to cost $1.8 million for the Red McCombs Community Court thanks to Spurs Give and the McCombs Foundation. Hemisfair also received $1 million from the Kronkosy Foundation for an older adult area – which is currently in design.

The post announced that a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on March 18 at 10 a.m.
