“Her son has already asked for her” | Family continues search for mother who’s been missing nearly three weeks

“Hopefully someone says something, knows something, even if it’s something little. It may not seem important, but it might be,” said Kate’s mother.

It’s been nearly three weeks since Katelyn “Kate” Vara was last seen, on the city’s Westside.

Kate’s family says she went to a medical appointment the morning, she went missing, but never made it home.

Kate’s mother Valerie Mendoza says there is some real concern for Katelyn’s safety, because since she’s gone missing, she hasn’t been in contact with anyone.

“It’s like she just vanished off the face of the earth, and no one’s heard from her at all,” said Mendoza.

Mendoza describes Kate as sweet, friendly, and has lots of friends.

“Everybody loves her. She has a lot of family, people that care about her,” said Mendoza.

According to Mendoza, on the morning of Aug. 6, Kate left her west-side home on Maria Elena, near Culebra to go to a medical appointment.

“Then she never made it back home, and then the next day, I think my mom called me and told me she hadn’t been home, and she normally comes home,” said Mendoza.

Kate’s family says she has struggled with drug abuse, and was known to disappear for a day or two, but she would usually keep in contact.

“None of her friends have talked to her, none of her family. The place that she goes to and hangs around with, no one seen her, no one heard from her,” said Mendoza.

On Saturday with the assistance of the nonprofit Search & Support San Antonio, the family handed out fliers and searched areas where they think Kate could be.

“Hopefully someone says something, knows something, even if it’s something little, it may not seem important, but it might be,” said Mendoza.

Kate is 26-years-old, stands 5-feet-tall and weighs about 100 pounds. Kate has long brown hair, that she usually wears in a ponytail.  She also has a Pennywise tattoo on her right forearm, and a tattoo on her lower right bottom cheek with her 4-year-old son’s name James, in red ink.

Mendoza says not knowing where Kate is has been hard for everyone, but the family is still hopeful, she will be found or will come home soon.

“It’s very hard because she’s never been gone this long. Her birthday’s coming up next month. Her son has already asked for her. I don’t even know what to tell him,” said Mendoza.

If you know anything about where Kate could be, you’re urged to contact San Antonio’s Missing Person’s Unit at 210-207-7660. You can also contact Search & Support San Antonio by clicking here.
