Here’s what you need to know before driving downtown for New Year’s Eve

Downtown San Antonio is having an exciting 24 hours. Plan ahead before going.

SAN ANTONIO — Downtown San Antonio is expected to see heavy crowds over the next day as the Valero Alamo Bowl and New Year’s celebrations draw in visitors. San Antonio Parks Foundation President Mary Jane Verette told KENS 5 the city could have as many as 70,000 people for New Year’s Eve.

But if you drive downtown without a plan, it could end up costing you. Here’s what need to do to save time and money:

1.Carpool or use rideshare when possible. Verette said downtown has plenty of parking but friends will still be able to save time and money when carpooling. Finding one parking spot is easier — and often cheaper — than searching for multiple spaces.

2.Make a parking plan before you arrive.  The City of San Antonio has a website that shows nearby parking options, allowing drivers to map out lots and garages close to their destination ahead of time.

Drivers should be skeptical of lots that do not appear on official maps. While property owners can use local lots for temporary parking during big events, any lots that only take cash, or can’t provide a receipts, should be avoided.

3.Leave early and expect delays. Ongoing construction may slow travel into and through downtown, including areas where streets are reduced to one lane like South Alamo Street. Drivers should build in extra time to their route to avoid rushing and frustration.

4.If you pay to park, don’t get back to the car too late. Tow trucks are notoriously punctual in downtown San Antonio and there is no “grace period” for drivers that stay in a lot past the time they paid for. If your parking time expires at 11 p.m. then get to the lot before that time. A tow truck driver can have your vehicle hooked up just minutes after your time is up.
