A 7-year-old hero, Bryson Campbell, saved his friend’s life by acting swiftly when he noticed the child choking at lunch.
VIDOR, Texas — The quick thinking of an Oak Forest Elementary student helped save his friend’s life Tuesday morning.
It was a normal day at school for 7-year-old Bryson Campbell as he made his way to lunch Tuesday. However, that was all about to change after he noticed something was wrong with his friend at the lunch table.
Teachers told Alisha Campbell, Bryson’s mother, that they looked across the cafeteria to see Bryson hitting another student on the back. It was then teachers noticed that the student was visibly choking, but before they could act, Bryson already had the situation under control.
“His eyes were watery, tears coming down, gasping for air and couldn’t breath. Then Bryson jumped into action,” said Alisha Campbell. “He saved his friends life, it was really incredible.”
Bryson Campbell said his friend had tapped him on the shoulder to alert him that he was choking. He knew he had to help, and the 7-year-old said panic never even crossed his mind.
“I heard him choking and I know what the right thing to do is, and I did it,” Bryson said matter-of-factly.
After a few hard pats on the back, the piece of food blocking the students airway came flying out.
Alisha Campbell says moments like these are why it is so important to teach your kids life saving tips, “It’s funny how something so small that you can teach your kids can have such a huge impact, and you never know when it’ll come in handy.”
Alisha Campbell honed her CPR skills while teaching at a daycare and decided to pass them along to the rest of her family. A lesson she says is important for everyone.
“Make sure that you know how to prevent someone from choking. Just little things like that, I feel like it’s important,” said Alisha Campbell.
Bryson was treated to a Hero’s welcome Wednesday morning, when the Red Cross came by Oak Forrest to award him with a pin for disaster services. He also got a token for a free Dairy Queen meal which he planned on enjoying after his interview with 12News.
Bryson had just one more message he wanted to share with everyone.
“Just always pay attention,” he said.
Bryson’s teachers made a point to thank him for saving a life, and proving hero’s come in all sizes.
