‘He’s not an animal. He’s not trash’ | Fiancé pleads for dashcam video after partner found dead on I-35

A love story shattered on I-35. After 31-year-old Quinton Simmons was found dead, his fiancé vowed to uncover what happened the night of Feb. 5 in downtown SA.

SAN ANTONIO — What started as a long-distance love story ended in tragedy on a stretch of highway in San Antonio.

Quinton Simmons, 31, was found dead just before 1 a.m. Feb. 6 on the northbound side of Interstate 35 near Cesar Chavez Boulevard, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

Officers were dispatched around 12:52 a.m. after reports of a body in the roadway. When they arrived, they found Simmons lying near construction equipment with apparent broken bones. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are investigating the case as an apparent sudden death. The Bexar County Medical Examiner determined Simmons died from blunt force injuries, and the circumstances surrounding his death remain under review.

No arrests have been made.

For Simmons’ fiancé, Steve Campos, the loss is deeply personal.

“That was my best friend, and I loved him with all my heart,” Campos said.

Campos and Simmons met online last June — Simmons living in Houston, Campos in San Antonio. Simmons planned to study in the medical field and had an appointment for financial aid on Feb. 11. Campos said Simmons had been approved to attend school in San Antonio and wanted to pursue a career as an anesthesiologist.

“He went to high school and graduated with a 5.0 GPA. He was very smart,” Campos said.

On Christmas Day, Campos proposed.

“We were getting ready to start a family this year, actually have a baby,” he said. “All that’s been cut short now.”

Campos said the night of Feb. 5, Simmons was with friends near I-35 and Cesar Chavez. Around 10:20 p.m., Simmons left.

When Simmons stopped answering his phone, Campos drove around downtown searching for him.

“I was literally feet away from him not knowing he was laying on the highway,” he said.

According to Campos, police said surveillance cameras show Simmons walking onto the entrance ramp and that he was intoxicated. Campos believes Simmons may have thought he was walking on a street while trying to make his way home.

“I don’t really know much, just that my partner was found on this freeway in a construction area,” Campos said.

Campos said Simmons’ wallet and phone were located farther down the highway from where his body was found. His ring and necklace remain missing.

“He was left there. He’s not an animal. He’s not trash,” Campos said. “I just want to know who hurt my baby and took him away from me.”

Friends describe Simmons as outgoing and generous.

“Little small guy, but his heart was so big he thought he was a 6 foot 6 giant,” Campos said. “He loved to dance. He loved to be the light of the party.”

Simmons had recently moved to San Antonio to build a future with Campos. The couple had even started a trail riding group together. The group’s logo was finalized the same day Simmons died.

“We started it together, and I’m gonna finish it for him,” Campos said.

Campos is now asking anyone who may have been driving in the area between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. that night — particularly anyone with dashcam video — to contact police.

“I won’t stop until we figure it out,” he said.

A balloon release and funeral are scheduled for Saturday in Humble to honor Simmons’ life.

Police say the investigation remains ongoing, and information could change as detectives continue reviewing evidence.
