SAN ANTONIO — It’s no secret that San Antonio has a pet overpopulation problem, but on Wednesday morning, some lucky kitties are getting a fresh start in a new city.
Staff and volunteers from San Antonio Pets Alive! loaded up dozens of at-risk kittens for transport across the country and into loving homes.
The kittens are being saved from San Antonio Animal Care Services, thanks to a partnership between all of the agencies involved.
The furry felines will be driven to the Municipal Airport in Castroville where nonprofit flight partner Dog Is My CoPilot, alongside Petco Love, will be ready to take flight.
Dog Is My CoPilot, founded in 2012, is a nonprofit that provides life-saving flights for shelter pets from overcrowded facilities—and doesn’t cost the rescue a penny! Each flight can hold about 75 animals. They work with shelters and nonprofits across the country to fight pet euthanasia and open up space for other homeless animals.
SAPA! says this flight isn’t just another rescue mission—it’s a milestone moment. One of the passengers, a mama cat named Hickory, along with her kittens Willow and Walnut, will mark Dog Is My CoPilot’s 39,000th animal transported to safety.
“These were stray kittens taken in by SAPA!, and now, thanks to teamwork and transport, they’re getting their chance at a forever family,” said Kristy Ward, SAPA!’s Director of Marketing and Events.
These transport missions are part of SAPA!’s ongoing efforts to keep the city’s euthanasia numbers down, reduce overcrowding, and give vulnerable animals their second chance.
“Partnering together with animal organizations like San Antonio Pets Alive! ensures each animal waiting in an overcrowded shelter has the chance to find a home,” said Dr. Rork, President and Chief Pilot. “Every animal we transport saves two; the one that we save and the one that takes its place.”
And while this flight doesn’t cost anything, SAPA! spends roughly $250 on each animal for exams, vaccinations, spay or neutering and more. They rely on donations to cover the expenses necessary for saving animals.
