Officials say three members of the Cortez family were riding home from San Antonio when a 25-year-old hit and killed them. A fourth was injured.

SAN ANTONIO — Dozens of motorcyclists revved up their engines and rode together in honor of three Kerr County relatives who officials say were hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver.

The trio were headed home from a day in San Antonio on the evening of May 3 when authorities said 25-year-old Jeremy Wasson crossed into the westbound lanes and hit them head-on. The crash killed Daniel Cortez Jr., 57; Cody Cortez, 34; and Cortney Cortez, 25.

A fourth member of the family, Joan Cortez, was also injured but survived.

Wasson was charged with three counts of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication assault; officials believe he was driving drunk. He’s since been released on bond.

“We’re a strong family and I see it’s broken,” Daniel Jacob Cortez, a loved one of the victims, told KENS 5 earlier this month. “I’m here to pull it back together, kind of like my dad did.”

The Cortezes were laid to rest Wednesday in Kerrville, where the motorcyclists led a funeral procession.
