Historic Gunter Hotel reopens after receiving massive $57M renovation

The hotel will offer four distinct restaurant and dining experiences, including Jots, The Keystone Club, Bar 414, and Paris Baguette.

The iconic Gunter Hotel downtown is now open after receiving massive renovations earlier this year.

The transformative $57 million renovation revitalized the 311-room property, from the public spaces to the guest rooms themselves.

Some of the new public spaces are now open, with more public spaces opening at the end of 2025. Hotel management says all hotel guest rooms are now open.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome guests to the newly transformed Gunter Hotel and to share the next chapter of this historic icon,” said Owner and Managing Director at Axle Capital Jiwon Choi. “Our team has worked tirelessly to blend the hotel’s rich legacy with the best in modern luxury and hospitality, so we are confident that The Gunter will offer an unforgettable stay for both locals and travelers from around the world.”

Dining, bar and cofee

The hotel offers four distinct restaurant and dining experiences, including  Jots, The Keystone Club, Bar 414, and Paris Baguette.

The  hotel’s signature restaurant, Jots, is an homage to the supper clubs that gained popularity in the mid-1900s. It is named after Jonathan “Jot” Gunter, a local rancher and financier of the hotel in 1909. The restaurant will serve classic American cuisine with a retro flair, hotel management says.

The Keystone Club is located in the lobby of the Gunter Hotel and features art deco chandeliers and ornate embellishments that surround the hotel’s interior. The bar’s menu compliments the elegant setting and offers a sophisticated and classic mix of cocktails, beer, and wine.

Bar 414 is speakeasy-style watering hole hidden behind a gallery wall. It was named for the guest room where Robert Johnson recorded in 1936. The bar features intage décor, a curated drink list, and a moody, welcoming atmosphere. An opening date for Bar 414 is coming soon.

Paris Baguette, the renowned café and bakery, will open its first San Antonio location onsite—serving artisanal pastries, breads, and expertly crafted coffee beverages. An opening date for Paris Baguette will be announced soon.

Guest rooms:

The hotel rooms themselves were updated with modern bathrooms, fashionable fixtures and a new color palette. There are 311 total hotel rooms including including 30 suites and 14 ADA compliant rooms.

The hotel is wanting to emphasize the history of blues legend Robert Johnson famously recording at the hotel in 1936. As a new in-room feature, each room will come with a record player to play one of more than 900 albums available in the vinyl library. An onsite “Vinyl Ambassador” is able to provide personal recommendations upon request.

In addition the vinyl library, the hotel is also offering a state-of-the-art recording studio as a new amenity in the public spaces, another nod to blues legend Robert Johnson.

The Gunter Hotel also offers 20,000 square feet of event and meeting spaces. Those spaces include the iconic Sky Walk, overlooking downtown San Antonio. It’s the perfect place for weddings, galas, fundraisers, etc.
